Villa Hügel
The Villa Hügel, located in the Bredeney district in Essen, was built in 1873 by Alfred Krupp and is the former residence and function house of the Krupp industrialist family.
The Cologne Cathedral architect, Karl Eduard Richard Voigtel, advised on the choice of materials for the building, and recommended Obernkirchner Sandstein®, as used for the Cologne Cathedral.
The villa has a total of 269 rooms with 8,100 m2 of residential and floor space and is situated in a 28 hectare park at a prominent location overlooking the Ruhr valley and the Baldeney Lake. Today, the residence is administered by the Kulturstiftung Ruhr (Ruhr Cultural Foundation), which organises regular events, concerts and exhibitions at the villa.
